World Series of Poker 2009

Mike Matusow

Mike Matusow is a professional poker player; he currently lives in Henderson, Nevada. He is commonly referred to as "The Mouth" because he continually trash talks during his games. He is known for running hours of play with a major misjudgment, which is commonly known as a "Mike Matusow Blow-Up" or "Mike Matusow Meltdown".

Mike Matusow Matusow didn't start playing poker seriously until the early 90's and was working as a poker dealer before he became a professional player. Some of his most notable successes are his three-time World Series of Poker bracelets, and his 2005 World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions victory.

He started playing poker at the age of 18 playing video poker, to the point where he injured his shoulders and arms. He was taught Texas hold'em by a rounder, and parlayed that into a career nearly ten years later.

In 1998 at the World Series of Poker, Matusow paid part of Scott Nguyen's entry fee into an event for the $10,000 no limit Texas hold'em main event. Nguyen would go on to win and have 333,333 dollars to Matusow which as the partial stake for the entrance fee. Three years later Matusow finished 6th in the World Series of Poker $10,00 no limit Hold'em main event. Matusow credits losing to Juan Carlos Mortensen as an example of his distrust in his instincts, being bluffed out of the game, and a major turning point for his professional career.

In 2005, Mike Matusow would finish 9th in the World Series of Poker main event, and managed to come away with 1 million dollars in winnings. A few months later he would win the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions in heads-up play against Hoyt Corkins, earning another million dollars in the process. He is credited with being the first player to win two million dollar prizes in the same year. He would go on to place third in the Tournament of Champions the following year, garnering himself 250 thousand dollars in the process.

In the 2008 World Series of Poker, Matusow won his third bracelet in the $5000 No Limit 2-7 Draw with rebuys event and defeated poker pro Jeff Lisandro in heads up play amassing $537,862 for first prize. IN the same year he would finish 30th out of 6,844 players in the Main Event making it far once again in the World Series.

It is noted that as of 2009 his live tournament winnings had rise to roughly 7.2 million dollars. In just his World Series of Poker winnings, he has amassed 3.1 million dollars. He is a controversial figure in the world of Poker, with many fans either loving or hating him for his trash talking. He has also battled drug issues in the past, and was even in jail in 2004 and 2005 after being found with cocaine.
