Johnny Chan, The Orient Express

Johnny Chan is a professional poker player. Johnny Chan was born in 1957 in Guangzhou (Canton), China. A few years after Johnny was born he and his family decided to move to Hong Kong from Guangzhou. This was not the first family move he would take. Just a few years later they moved out of the country. Johnny Chan and his family decided to move to the United States of America. They moved to Phoenix, Arizona where once again they would not stick around long.

They seemed to like to move around a lot. In 1973 they moved again to Houston, Texas from Phoenix, Arizona. His Family owned restaurants there in Houston, Texas so that is why they decided to move there. Johnny Chan was planning on continuing in the family business but he became a professional poker player instead. He found out he liked poker after he went on a junket to Las Vegas, Nevada when he was 16 years old.

The Orient Express - Johnny Chan Later when Johnny Chan was 21 he dropped out of the University of Houston because he decided to become a professional poker player. He was majoring at the Universality of Houston in Hotel and Restaurant management. He then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to be a professional gambler full time.

Over the years Johnny Chan has earned quite a lot of money playing professional poker. He has won many bracelets(10 to be exact) in the World Series of Poker events. He chalks up some of his success to the fact he is Asian. He says many people just were not accustomed to playing against Asian players (the likes of John Juanda and Liz Lieu came way later).

Johnny Chan became quite popular in the late 1980's. Johnny Chan won the World Series of Poker final event table in two consecutive years in 1987 and 1988. This made Johnny Chan quite popular and let everyone know he was the real deal, a great professional poker player. You don't win the World Series of Poker final events two years in a row unless you are a good poker player, ask Doyle Brunson!

In 1989 Johnny Chan almost won for a third year in a row but he came in second place to professional poker player Phil Hellmuth that year. Many prognosticators think that Johnny Chan could be the last person to ever win the World Series of Poker final event two years in a row because of the increasingly larger field.

There is one thing that Johnny Chan is known for. When Johnny Chan plays a game of poker he is known to bring along his "lucky" orange with him to the poker table. After Johnny won the World Series of Poker final event two years in a row other players decided they might try and bring fruit to the games too. They thought they might could improve their luck by bringing along some fruit of their own. Johnny Chan said that the fruit really is not there because he thinks it is lucky. He said that he takes it along because it smells good and when they used to let people smoke during the game it helped him because he does not like the smell of smoke.
